Words of Walt- Hard Work

Walt Disney knew the importance of hard work.  He began working for his father as a young boy delivering papers.  He also endured his fair share of failures in his business ventures.  Success was something he constantly worked towards.  His hard work has led to the Disney corporation being one of the biggest entertainment companies in America.

“People often ask me if I know the secret of success and if I could tell others how to make their dreams come true.  My answer is, you do it by working.”

Words of Walt- Perseverance

Today’s “Words of Walt” are about perseverance.

“Get a good idea, and stay with it.  Dog it, and work at it until it’s done, and done right.”

What a good message.  Sometimes it is easy to quit when things get hard.  Walt reminds us to stick with it.  Not only stick with it and finish it, but make sure it’s done right 🙂

Words of Walt- Business Model

“To try to keep an operation like Disneyland going you have to pour it in there.  It’s what I call ‘Keeping the show on the road.’  Not just new attractions, but keeping it staffed properly… you know, never letting your personnel get sloppy, never let them be unfriendly.  That’s been our policy all our lives.  My brother and I have done that and that is what has built our organization.”

I think that one of the greatest things about Disney and one of the things that keeps me coming back over and over again.  The customer service is outstanding.  There are very few companies that maintain such high standards, and I am thankful that Disney does!

Fun Fact Friday- Walt and Trains

Walt Disney had a childhood love of trains, and it goes all the way back to his childhood in Marceline.  As a child he would watch his Uncle Mike who was a train conductor.  As an adult his love of trains continued.  When he and his wife Lillian purchased their home in Holmby Hills, California, Walt began work on the “Carolwood Pacific Railroad.”  This backyard train was a 1/8 scale train that ran through their sprawling backyard.

Walt was able to further live out his childhood dreams by driving the steam locomotive to the Main Street Station at Disneyland on opening day.

Words of Walt- Disneyland- a work of love

It’s no doubt that the Disney Corporation is a hugely successful and is worth a LOT of money, but the Disney parks didn’t necessarily start off with money as the end goal.  Walt always made it clear that the goal of the parks were to bring people together.  While a Disney vacation can be pricey, it still is and always have the purpose of bringing families and friends together!

“Disneyland is a work of love.  We didn’t go into Disneyland just with the idea of making money”

Fun Fact Friday- Main Street USA

I’ve done a LOT of Disney research and reading, because let’s face it… I love Disney parks, and consider Walt Disney to be one of my idols!  I’ve heard many times that Main Street USA is supposedly based on Walt’s childhood hometown of Marceline Missouri.

After more research I’ve discovered however that Main Street USA was based on two towns!  A man named Harper Goff worked along side of Walt Disney when developing Main Street USA.  He grew up in Fort Collins, Colorado and showed Walt photos of his hometown.  Main Street USA is based on elements of both Marceline, and Fort Collins.

Additional Fun Fact- each Disney Park worldwide has their own version of Main Street USA, although it may have a different name in some international locations.

Fun Fact Friday- The Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Fun Fact- Did you know that the Sorcerer in the Fantasia clip- “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” had a name?  His name is Yen Sid.  This may seem like a peculiar name, but if you look closely it is Disney spelled backwards!  Yen Sid was not named in the film, but he was named by the animators as a tribute to Walt.  Yen Sid can be seen in both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000, as well as the Kingdom Hearts video game.
