Words of Walt- The Secret of Success

Without getting to into too many of my personal beliefs and the way that children are raised today vs. my upbringing I’ll say this…

I was raised with the idea that nothing in life was going to be handed to me.  If I wanted something in life I had to work for it.  When I was growing up my father worked a full time job, a part time job, and went to school full time; with the idea that when he graduated that he would have a better job and be able to provide more easily for our family.  Because he was constantly working or at school I didn’t see a lot of him for about 5 years.  What I did see is was how hard my father worked.  I saw how much time and care he put in, and the sacrifices that he made for our family, so that we would have our basic needs met.

Extra money was not something that we had a lot of because of the costs of schooling and other bills, so from a young age I learned that if I wanted to go to summer camp, or wanted that new thingabob (you know… I hear Ariel’s got 20) I was going to have to work for it.  This was a mantra that has continued to follow me through my adult life.  I am a full time teacher, who also assists with the marching band, and spring musical at school.  I help my husband (who also works full time) manage our photography business .  I also am an independent travel agent with Charming Travels LLC.  I believe that all this work pays off… it affords me the travel that I so enjoy and the opportunity to experience life the way that I so choose.  I believe that is why I identify and embrace today’s quote.

So here’s the point of today’s post… what Uncle Walt has to say about the secret to success-

“People often ask me if I know the secret of success and if I could tell others how to make their dreams come true.  My answer is, you do it by working.”

Words of Walt- Words to live by…

I was perusing “The Quotable Walt Disney” that was compiled by Dave Smith in search of today’s “Words of Walt” and I went to the chapter entitled “On Success and Failure.”  I am very often intrigued by what Walt has to say on this subject because he experienced so much on both ends of the spectrum.

I found today’s quote to be very inspiration in my own life.  I am hard worker and a bit of a perfectionist.  I strive to do everything with greatness, so I am going to take today’s quote to heart.

“Get a good idea, and stay with it.  Dog it, and work at it until it’s done, and done right.”

I know how this applies to my personal life, and I believe that the Disney Corporation is still following this mantra in regards to its parks and ongoing projects.  The imagineers develop ideas and they run with it, making sure that it’s perfect before they release it to the public.  I am excited to see the new ideas that are coming to the parks in the new future, like Toy Story Land, Star Wars; Galaxy’s Edge, the Tron coaster, and so much more 🙂

Words of Walt- The Child in us all

We all know that I am addicted to Disney… the parks, the movies, I love it all.  Um hello, I write a blog called confessions of a Mouskaholic… clearly I love all things Disney.  On more than one occasion I’ve had other adults question why I love Disney… why do I go to Disney all the time and watch Disney movies even though I don’t have children.  For me it about the broad appeal of the parks and the movies.  I am a firm believer that Disney is a place for everyone.  It is a place for adults, families, children, and everyone in between.

This is what Uncle Walt has to say- “I do not make films primarily for children.  I make them for the child in all of us, whether we be six or sixty.  Call the child innocence.  The worst of us is not without innocence, although buried deeply it might be.  IN my work I try to reach and speak to that innocence, showing it the fun and joy of living; showing it that laughter is healthy; showing it that the human species, although happily ridiculous at times, is still reaching for the stars.”

Words of Walt- Progress

“The age we’re living in is the most extraordinary the world has ever seen.  There are whole new concepts of things, and we now have the tools to change these concepts into realities. We’re moving forward.  In terms of my work, I believe people want to know about this universe that keeps unfolding before them.  But let’s be clear about one thing-  I’m not trying to teach anything to anybody.   I want to entertain the public.”

What is mind boggling to me is how much the world and technology has changed since Walt’s passing in 1966.  51 years later I think the world would be unrecognizable to Walt, yet Disney continues to push the boundaries with technology and entertainment.  I like to think that in that regard Walt would be happy.

Words of Walt- Adversity

“All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles have strengthened me.”

While the name Walt Disney is a household name these days, he didn’t have the easiest start.  He grew up with a harsh father, was fired from several of his early jobs, struggled financially in his early business years, and had just as many failures as he did successes; but Walt never gave up.  From each of his failures he learned and moved on.  When one thinks of Walt Disney we often don’t think of his failures, but his successes and the empire that he laid the base for.

Words of Walt

“People still think of me as a cartoonist, but the only thing I lift a pen or pencil for these days is to sign a contract, a check, or an autograph.”

It still amazes me to think of Walt’s humble beginnings and the empire that he has built.  He started as a struggling cartoonist and was able to create something truly wonderful.

Words of Walt- Animated Films

“Because the eye is the most sensitive and dependable of our sense organs, the motion picture offers the widest, direct avenue to our emotions.  Whereas the still picture can suggest only a fragment of fact or fiction, the cartoon-in-motion is without limit in communicating ideas, events, and human relations.”

Words of Walt- Mickey Mouse

This is probably one of the most famous quotes by Walt Disney, and one of my all time favorites-

“I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing- that it was all started by a mouse.”

To me this quote is a symbol and a beacon of what Disney is.  There is SO much that goes on at Disney on a daily basis.  So much to see and do, but don’t lose sight of the fact that it was all started by a mouse, something small.  It’s not always about the large moments, sometimes it’s about the small things.

Words of Walt-Mickey Mouse

“Mickey Mouse is, to me, a symbol of independence.  He was a means to an end.  He popped out of my mind onto a drawing pad twenty years ago on a train from Manhattan to Hollywood at a time when business fortunes of my brother Roy and myself were at lowest ebb and disaster seemed right around the corner.  Born of necessity, the little fellow literally freed us of immediate worry.  He provided the means for expanding our organization to its present dimensions and for extending the medium of cartoon animation toward new entertainment levels.  He spelled production liberation for us.”

Words of Walt- Business Model

“To try to keep an operation like Disneyland going you have to pour it in there.  It’s what I call ‘Keeping the show on the road.’  Not just new attractions, but keeping it staffed properly… you know, never letting your personnel get sloppy, never let them be unfriendly.  That’s been our policy all our lives.  My brother and I have done that and that is what has built our organization.”

I think that one of the greatest things about Disney and one of the things that keeps me coming back over and over again.  The customer service is outstanding.  There are very few companies that maintain such high standards, and I am thankful that Disney does!
