Tuesday’s Tips- Take an Uber!

Disney makes getting from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to your resort a piece of cake with Disney’s Magical Express.  With this free service you’ll be taken from the airport straight to your resort on a Disney themed motor coach.  You won’t even have to worry about going to baggage claim!  Disney takes care of that for you as well!  Put the special tags on your bags, and they will be magically delivered to your resort after your arrival.

While these awesome perks are magical indeed, they’re designed to keep you on property.  A magic bus that eliminates the need for a rental car?  Yes perk, but also convenient for Disney to keep you (and more importantly your $$$) in their parks, stores and restaurants.  (I’m certainly not complaining either… “All magic comes at a price.”)

all-magic-2

There have been plenty of Disney trips that we have taken where we’ve been very content to stay right on Disney property and keep our adventure there, however there are sometimes where it is also nice to get off property to visit other theme parks, and restaurants.  While I’m a dedicated “mouskaholic”  I also very much enjoy the magic of Harry Potter.

Because of my devotion to this other magic, I have visited The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. (Shhhh… don’t tell the Disney Gods lol!)  We had a few options for getting from Disney to Universal for us, taking an “Uber” was the most economical, and quickest option.  If you purchase your Universal tickets through at travel agent, they have the option of selling you tickets that include round trip transportation from the Disney Resort to the Universal resort via Mears Motorcoaches.  This isn’t a bad option, but it is time consuming because the bus makes stops at multiple resorts, AND costs $26 per person for the roundtrip transfer.  For a family of four you’re looking at $104.00 extra just to get from Disney to Universal.  Another option is renting a car… If you’re on a week long trip you’re looking at at around $150.00 – $200.00 (depending on car type and size) for a week long car rental.  If you’re only plan is to head to universal or off property once or twice this is definitely not the most economical plan.  You could head to the “Disney Car Care Center” and rent a car just for the day, but getting there means taking time out of your valuable vacation time to do so.

So what is the most economical solution that I’ve found?  Ride-sharing Apps!  I personally have only used Uber, but I know that Lyft is also available in the Orlando Area.  Ride-sharing apps base their fares on a combination of mileage and time spent in travel, rather than basing in on per person.  So with an UberX you can transport up to 4 people for one low price.

Here is the price (without a surge) going from Disney’s All Star Music Resort to Universal Studios

IMG_1212.PNG

So for $17.24  you can transport 1-4 individuals to Universal (one way).  So even at the round trip price of about $35.00, that’s still considerably less than round trip for two on the Mears motor coaches ($52.00 round trip for 2), and about the same price as a one day car rental, just without the hassle of heading to the Disney Car Care Center.

Here are some other approximations of cost to other popular orlando destinations (Estimates are done from the All Star Music Resort to the destination)

One of my favorite places to eat off of Disney Property is Giordano’s Pizza!  It’s deep dish Chicago style STUFFED pizza, and it’s AMAZING (FYI, they also deliver).  An uber to Giordano’s is approximately $11 bucks

An Uber to the Orlando Eye= $14.00

An Uber to Orlando Premium Outlets= $12

An Uber to Seaworld= $13.50

To use Uber you just need to download the app to your smart phone, and sign up with a valid credit card.  If you’re interested in getting up to $15 off your first ride enter this code when you sign up- ashleyf1931ue

Happy Riding!

Musical Monday- “One Man Newsies”

So, I’ve been putting off posting my top ten live action Disney movies for a while because there are so many great movies.  One that is for sure in my top 10 is the musical “Newsies.”  I have always enjoyed the movie, and a few year ago my best friend took me to see the musical in Cleveland for my birthday, and it was terrific seeing it live!

File_000 (2).jpeg

The music for the 1992 movie was written by Alan Menken (He also wrote for The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, Pocahontas, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Hercules, Enchanted, and Tangled… can we say DISNEY LEGEND!!!).  The movie was adapted nearly 20 years later and released as a stage musical in 2011, and hit broadway in 2012.

The famous YouTuber, Nick Pitera, put together his own tribute to the amazing music from the Newsies.  His fame comes from not only his amazing vocal range, but his creative and unique videos in which he does ALL of the parts, yes even the female roles!  (He records multiple times with him singing different parts and then combines it for one amazing video!)  So without further ado, I give you- “One Man Newsies”

If you enjoyed this video check out this past “Musical Monday” post, where he does “One Man Disney Movie”

Fun Fact Friday- Who is Orange Bird?

About 5 or 6 years ago I got really into pin trading at Disney  (some may say obsessed…)  One of the characters that really intrigued me was this little orange bird character. At the time I didn’t know much about him, but he was cute, playful, and I made it my goal to collect all of his pins! Every cast member I interacted with I was searching for orange bird pins! (FYI, I totally collected them all too… it took two trips to do it, but I have them all through trading!)

While I was definitely excited about collecting his pins I had NO IDEA who orange bird was, so I did a little research-

Who is Orange Bird?

The Orange Bird was created in 1970 as a mascot for the Florida Citrus Commission in exchange for them sponsoring the Tiki Room attraction at Magic Kingdom. Accompanied by singer Anita Bryant the two appeared in ads for Florida oranges and Bryant narrated a record album telling the character’s story. After the Anita Bryant ad campaign was dropped in the late 70s, the Orange Bird had a solo career and appeared in a few educational shorts in the 1980s such as Foods and Fun: A Nutrition Adventure and The Orange Bird and the Nutrition Bandwagon. Eventually, the bird would fade into obscurity when Disney and the FCC severed their ties in 1987.

Years later, at Tokyo Disneyland in 2004, the Orange Bird would experience a revival as the Japanese became infatuated with the character and the character received a lot of merchandising to coincide with Japan’s annual Orange Day on April 14th of that year. The Orange Bird soon returned to appearing regularly on merchandise in the US as well.

The Orange Bird appeared at Magic Kingdom as a walk around character during that park’s first decade. He would often be found roaming Adventureland, outside the Enchanted Tiki Room. A figure of the character was also perched in a spot behind the counters of the Sunshine Tree Terrace, which has since been restored to the location after having spent years in the Disney Archives. Orange Bird merchandise can be found in retail locations at both Walt Disney World and the Disneyland Resort, despite the fact that the character otherwise never appeared at the latter.

Eventually, on April 17, 2012, the Orange Bird made a proper return to the Sunshine Tree Terrace.

Unlike other birds, the Orange Bird is incapable of singing or speaking and instead communicates with orange-colored thought bubbles. He is mocked by other birds as a result of this and Orange Bird generally looks for friends wherever he goes.

Words of Walt- Laughter, Imagination, & Dreams

Laughter is timeless, Imagination has no age, and Dreams are forever.” – Walt Disney

Waltdisney4

Walt Disney

I know I’ve mentioned it before in my writings, but for my newer readers who don’t know me, My name is Ashley, and I’m a mouskaholic.  While Disney is my passion, it is not my career (yet… maybe someday!)  I am currently employed as a 7-12 grade choir director at a suburban school district in Northeast Ohio.  I am currently in my 11th year of teaching which seems unreal!!!  I DEFINITELY don’t feel like I’m old enough to have been teaching 11 years!

With that being said, I have WONDERFUL students, who often present me with gifts of art work!  One of my dry erase boards in my room is basically covered in artwork that my students have given me! I have one student who just finished a super cool “fauvism” portrait of Robin Williams, and another student who turned some “Words of Walt” into a work of art.  So today’s quote is one that my student turned into art for me!

March 1st- Resolutions Follow Up

We are officially heading into the 3rd month of this year, so it’s time to check in with my New Years Resolutions.  I can honestly say that for some of them, it’s probably the longest that I’ve ever stuck with a resolution, while with others, I need to get my behind in gear!

Resolution #1- Be healthier in 2017.  With this resolution it was 2 fold… both being physically healthier by losing weight, and by being mentally healthier.  For the weight, I lost 13 pounds in January, but only 1 in February. While I am continuing in the right direction, I know that I could be better about logging my food, and I got sloppy in my food choices.  I know that I am more successful when I log my food because it holds me accountable.  I want to do better in March with this.  As for mental health, February was stressful with events at school, but I have been working on techniques for stress reduction.  Am I still a little nutty, absolutely… but mental health is a journey.

Resolution #2– BLOG MORE!  I have been making a genuine effort to be more consistent in my blogging this year, and I am succeeding!  In January I did 11 posts, and in February 12 posts!!  In addition to blogging more, Mr. Mouskaholic and I added a YouTube channel, as well as increased social media presence!  You can now subscribe to our YouTube Channel, Follow on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (Check out all the handles at the bottom of this post!)  I really want to keep up the momentum that I’ve built in the past two months as well as keep up with our monthly (for right now) YouTube posts!

Resolution #3- Earn more Swagbucks in 2017. February is a short month, but I still managed to earn $30 in gift cards towards our Disney vacation!  While that is behind last year’s average of $48 per month, overall, my yearly average is still a little higher than last year, at $52.50 per month so far!  If you are interested in learning more about how Swagbucks can help you save for your Disney trip, CLICK HERE.

Resolution #4- Continue to have new experiences at Disney in 2017- When I last posted at the end of January, I talked about new restaurants that we have reservations for.  In addition to trying new restaurants, we are VERY excited that Pandora will be opening at Animal Kingdom, and that the new Rivers of Light show will be available at Animal Kingdom when we’re down there!  The parks are always changing and we are excited for the new experiences!

Resolution #5- Book more trips with Charming Travels LLC- Super excited that I just booked another trip for an awesome family!  I love helping people plan their Disney vacations!  It brings me so much joy!

Resolution #6- Run a Half Marathon- I STILL haven’t even started to work on this goal yet.  I live in Ohio, so I will blame the weather lol!  I have gotten 13 pounds off so that’s less to carry around when I run. I did decide that I want to run the Akron Half Marathon and  maybe in March the weather will be better enough to start training!

So that’s my resolution update!  Here’s to keeping at it!  How are you doing on your resolutions?
